Goodreads Summary
This innovative, heartfelt debut novel tells the story of a girl who’s literally allergic to the outside world. When a new family moves in next door, she begins a complicated romance that challenges everything she’s ever known. The narrative unfolds via vignettes, diary entries, texts, charts, lists, illustrations, and more.
My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.
Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.
MY REVIEW
Maddy is allergic to everything. She never goes out and is super paranoid. First thing that grabbed me-that simple yet intriguing concept.
Maddy was unique-and not just because of her condition. She was sweet and innocent but not to the point of making you roll your eyes at her saintliness and innocence. It was more of a kind of cute innocence that she exuded. She was bubbly, bright and quite funny as well as witty. She longs to be like everyone else and live a normal life.
One of my favorite parts of this book was the format! Completely original ranging from normal chapters to IM & TXT chapters and then to diary entries and then to one paragraph chapters. There were even diagrams and little sketches. Sounds messy right? But everything just adds to the uniqueness that is Maddy and the originality of the book!
For the romance-it has got to be one of the sweetest i've ever read. Olly is a simple guy and yet so extremely sweet and unique! Drama free but their relationship is not like anything you've ever read before! Olly does come from a bad home but it doesn't dampen his personality!
And then the faster Maddy falls for Olly, the more she questions her situation. The moment she left the house and ran to Olly was probably the most beautiful moment in the book, It was empowering and bittersweet for someone like Maddy who had NEVER been outside and then suddenly all rational thoughts leave her and she just..acts.
There is a little twist in the end-one that will send Maddy's whole world spiraling!
Quick, light-hearted but emotional, this books definitely gives me the feels! Sweetness and cuteness are practically tangible in this one!
